Norway, Michigan

Norway is a city in Dickinson County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 2,959.
The city is in the southwest of Norway Township, but is politically independent. It is on U.S. Highway 2, which connects with Michigan State Highway 95 about six miles west in Iron Mountain and with U.S. Highway 41 about 21 miles to the east. U.S. Highway 141 north merges with US 2 about four miles west of the city. U.S. Highway 8 has its western terminus in the city and crosses the Menominee River to continue west in Wisconsin.

Image:MIMap-doton-Norway.PNG According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.0 km² (8.9 mi²). 22.8 km² (8.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,959 people, 1,288 households, and 812 families residing in the city. The population density was 129.5/km² (335.6/mi²). There were 1,392 housing units at an average density of 60.9/km² (157.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.53% White, 0.00% African American, 0.95% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,288 households out of which 30.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.91.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.3% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 20.6% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 90.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $31,059, and the median income for a family was $37,533. Males had a median income of $31,595 versus $21,350 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,681. 10.8% of the population and 7.5% of families were below the poverty line. 14.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
