Norway is a town located in Herkimer County, New York, USA. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 711.

The Town of Norway is located in the east-central part of the county. The town borders the Adirondack State Park.

History

The town was first settled around 1787. Norway was formed in 1792 immediately after the creation of Herkimer County. Norway was origianlly a large town, and it was subsequently broken up into about thirty-five new towns in several counties.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 92.9 km² (35.9 mi²). 92.3 km² (35.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.72% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 711 people, 247 households, and 185 families residing in the town. The population density was 7.7/km² (20.0/mi²). There were 311 housing units at an average density of 3.4/km² (8.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 99.02% White, 0.00% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 247 households out of which 34.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% were non-families. 19.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the town the population was spread out with 27.6% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 27.7% from 45 to 64, and 7.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 116.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 116.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $36,719, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $23,846 for females. The per capita income for the town was $15,396. 10.1% of the population and 6.3% of families were below the poverty line. 17.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
