Notting Hill Gate tube station

From Free net encyclopedia

Template:London stations Notting Hill Gate tube station is a London Underground station in Notting Hill. On the Central Line it is between Holland Park and Queensway stations, and on the District Line and Circle Line it is between High Street Kensington and Bayswater stations. It is on the boundary of Travelcard Zone 1 and Zone 2. It opened on July 30, 1900 and is most famous for its proximity to Portobello Road, the site of the movie Notting Hill, the Notting Hill Carnival, and the Portobello Market.

The station was rebuilt in the 1950s, linking two stations on the Circle and District and Central lines, which had previously been accessed on either side of the street, with an entirely underground station concourse. The new station acted as an interchange between the deep level Central Line and the Victorian sub-surface Circle and District lines, and also acted as a pedestrian subway under the widened Notting Hill Gate. The subway contained a ticket office, toilet (now closed) and newsagent.
