Onancock is a town located in Accomack County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,525.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.7 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 1,525 people, 656 households, and 392 families residing in the town. The population density was 560.8/km² (1,452.3/mi²). There were 733 housing units at an average density of 269.5/km² (698.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 66.43% White, 31.41% African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 2.89% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 656 households out of which 23.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.3% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 40.1% were non-families. 38.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the town the population was spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 21.6% from 25 to 44, 24.1% from 45 to 64, and 26.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females there were 80.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 73.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $28,214, and the median income for a family was $37,039. Males had a median income of $25,956 versus $19,250 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,393. 15.3% of the population and 8.4% of families were below the poverty line. 20.4% of those under the age of 18 and 15.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
