Outback Steakhouse
From Free net encyclopedia
Outback Steakhouse is a United States-based restaurant chain that was first started in Tampa, Florida, owned by Outback Steakhouse, Inc. with locations all over the world using the Australian outback as the theme. The restaurants are decorated with Australian icons such as boomerangs, pictures of kangaroos, koalas, etc. To further show their dedication to the theme, the items on the menu are named after places in Australia and accompanied by animals, things, or places found there (e.g Ayers Rock Strip and Kookaburra Wings). During the Christmas season, some restaurants hang their Christmas trees upside down from the ceiling to emphasize their origin from "the land down under".
The restaurant targets the mid-priced diner segment, most meals are priced between $10 and $20. Each dinner comes with a loaf of bread, which is refilled at any time.
Outback Steakhouse serves Foster's Lager, a brand of Australian beer that is more popular overseas than it is in Australia. The Foster's available in the United States is brewed in Canada, rather than imported from Australia.
By and large, the food is not authentically Australian, being based more on American cuisine. Many of the menu items would puzzle an Australian, as they are not commonly found in that country.
There are two franchises of Outback Steakhouse in Sydney, Australia, with a decor and menu almost identical to other branches around the world. Somewhat ironically, they provide locals with the opportunity to sample American cuisine not otherwise easily available in Australia.
The company is a major contributor to the Republican Party.
