Pamela Lyndon Travers (9 August, 1899 - 23 April, 1996) was born Helen Lyndon Goff in Maryborough, Queensland, Australia, was the author of Mary Poppins and a student of G. I. Gurdjieff.

Both a published poet and a novelist, she knew William Butler Yeats and T. S. Eliot. She preferred to be called P. L. Travers (the two first initials were used to disguise a woman's name, a practice common to writers from J. K. Rowling to D.C. Fontana).

Goff was born to bank manager Travers Robert Goff and Margaret Agnes (neé Morehead), a couple that had married exactly nine months before.

Her father died when she was seven and Lawson (1999) notes that "epileptic seizure delirium" was given as the cause of death. However, Travers herself "always believed the underlying cause was sustained, heavy drinking".
