Pedro Pires

Pedro Verona Rodrigues Pires (born 29 April 1934) is the socialist President of Cape Verde, since March 2001, succeeding António Mascarenhas Monteiro.
Before becoming president he had been the Prime Minister of Cape Verde, and lead the country between 1975 to 1991, when he was defeated in the country's first multi-party elections.
Pires ran for a second term as president in elections held on 12 February 2006. He narrowly defeated former Prime Minister Carlos Veiga, winning 50.98% of the vote, and was sworn in for his second term on March 22.
