• Pip, short for Philip Pirrip, is the name given by Charles Dickens to the protagonist of the semi-autobiographical novel Great Expectations.
• Pip also refers to the seed of several fruits such as apples and oranges.
• Pip is also increasingly used as an acronym for Personal Information Portal, especially important in the area of home automation.
• Pip is one of the recurring South Park characters, clearly inspired by the Dickens character (see above). It is also the name of an episode of South Park, in which Pip is the main character.

• Internal Pip happens toward the end of incubation a of a developing chick. This is a critical stage where the chick must force through the internal membrane that separates the developing chick from the 'airsac' end. This normally happens 36-72 hours before hatch and can last for several hours. External pip is when the chick begins the task of pipping around the inside of the shell and this normally takes the remaining 24-72 hours of the incubation period.
