Image:Poultney vt highlight.png Poultney is a town in Rutland County in the southwest of the U.S. state of Vermont. New York state is on its western border. As of the 2000 census, Poultney had a total population of 3,633 and is home to Green Mountain College, a private liberal arts college with about 700 students, focusing on environmental studies. The Village of Poultney is entirely within the town.

Poultney and East Poultney are both listed in the National Registry of Historic Places, with many historical buildings. Among these are the Union Academy dating to 1791, The Melodeon Factory built in 1840 and the 1896 Victorian school house.

Poultney shares beautiful Lake St. Catherine (about 800 acres) with the town of Wells. Poultney is the center of the world's rare slate belt, where slate roofing, tiles, and building blocks are mined and milled.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 116.0 km² (44.8 mi²). 113.8 km² (43.9 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.94% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 3,633 people, 1,287 households, and 845 families residing in the town. The population density was 31.9/km² (82.7/mi²). There were 1,673 housing units at an average density of 14.7/km² (38.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.16% White, 0.69% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.88% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.25% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,287 households out of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.3% were non-families. 27.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the town the population was spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 17.6% from 18 to 24, 25.0% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $31,711, and the median income for a family was $40,556. Males had a median income of $31,148 versus $25,303 for females. The per capita income for the town was $14,963. 9.3% of the population and 6.3% of families were below the poverty line. 7.7% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
