Presidio

A Presidio was a type of fortress built by the Spanish in North Africa during the 16th century to protect against pirates. Presidios were located in the Southwest United States as well:
- The Presidio of Monterey is a military facility, founded in 1770 and currently housing the Defense Language Institute, in Monterey, California.
- The Presidio of San Diego, founded in 1769 in San Diego, California.
- The Presidio of San Francisco is a former military facility, founded in 1776 and now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, California.
- The Presidio of Santa Barbara is a former military facility, founded in 1782 in Santa Barbara, California.
- The Presidio of Sonoma, or Sonoma Barracks, was established in 1836 by Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo (the "Commandante-General of the Northern Frontier of Alta California") in Sonoma, California as a part of Mexico's strategy to halt Russian incursions into the region.
- Presidio County, Texas, a county in Texas, is home to a Presidio as described above.
