Queensland Reds
From Free net encyclopedia
The Queensland Reds (for sponsorship reasons referred to as QR Queensland Reds) represent Queensland in the sport of rugby union. Prior to 1996 they were a representative team selected on merit from the rugby union club competitions in Queensland. With the introduction of the Super 12 competition they moved to a franchise model where players are contracted to the Reds through the Queensland Rugby Union.
From 1996 to 2005 they were one of three Australian teams competing in the Super 12 competition, alongside the New South Wales Waratahs and the ACT Brumbies. The Reds finished as minor premiers in 1996 and 1999, but they have never reached the Super 12 final. From 2006 they will compete in the Super 14 competition.
The Reds played their home games at Ballymore until 2005, but from 2006 they will make Suncorp Stadium their primary home, after trialling the venue in 2004 and 2005. [1] At first, it was announced that they would play all of their 2006 home fixtures in Brisbane, but as a part of a deal with QR, the Reds will play their final regular-season home fixture that season at Dairy Farmers Stadium in Thuringowa (near Townsville). [2]
The Reds have a young squad with up to of nine players out of fifteen run on players being 22 years old or younger in 2005. John Roe was appointed captain for the 2006 season, with Chris Latham and Mark Connors being appointed as his deputies. The position of captain was formerly vacant due to Nathan Sharpe leaving the Reds to join the Western Force.
Traditionally, several players from the Reds make the Wallabies team each year.
