Campus and grounds

The campus and surrounding grounds of RRU are a Canadian National Historic Site, Hatley National Historic Site.

The grounds have served several uses over time:

  • Originally developed as a farm in the 19th century
  • Purchased by James Dunsmuir to build a lavish estate
  • Hatley Castle was constructed between 1906 and 1908, after which the Dunsmuirs took up residence
  • Following Dunsmuir's death, the estate was purchaed in 1940 by the Canadian Government to serve as a Naval Training Establishment, HMCS Royal Roads
  • In 1947 it was converted into the Canadian Services College Royal Roads to train officers of all military branches
  • In 1968, the name of the College was changed to Royal Roads Military College
  • In 1995, the military college was closed and the land and facilities was leased by the provincial government of British Columbia
  • Royal Roads University was established and opened immediately

Hatley castle overlooks an aviary lagoon (Esquimalt Lagoon) and Juan de Fuca Strait, a body of water linking the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Georgia and separating southern Vancouver Island from Washington State's Olympic Peninsula. The Castle is also surrounded by well manucured gardens, as well as wild woodlands. Hatley Castle makes a frequent appearance in movies and TV series programs. This castle has appeared in the X-Men and X-Men 2 and X-Men 3 film series, the Smallville TV series and several other film and television productions. It also provided a spectacular venue for an outdoor concert by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa in 1993.
