Development
SIAI Marchetti began work on the aircraft in 1976, hoping to offer it to the company's existing customer base of small air forces operating their piston-engined SF.260. Formally announced in Paris the following year, interest was strong enough to justify the construction of two prototypes, the first of which flew on April 10 1981.
Like many military trainers, the S-211 can be armed for weapons training or light ground attack duties.
Variants
- S.211 - original production version
- S.211A - more powerful version developed with input from Grumman as a contender for the USAF and USN's JPATS aircraft, eventually won by the T-6 Texan II.
- M-311 - uprated version announced by Aermacchi in 2004
Users
- 130 and 131 Squadron Republic of Singapore Air Force (30 aircraft, including 24 assembled locally by Singapore Aircraft Industries)
- 105 Training Squadron and 7 Tactical Fighter Squadron Philippine Air Force (19 aircraft, including 15 assembled locally by Philippine Aerospace Development Corporation
- Haiti was unable to pay for four aircraft ordered, which were subsequently sold to civil operators. Oracle Corporation CEO Larry Ellison famously purchased one of these machines.
