The Soviet Military Administration in Germany (Russian initials: SVAG (Советская военная администрация в Германии, СВАГ); German: Sowjetische Militäradministration in Deutschland - SMAD) was the Soviet military government, headquartered in Karlshorst, which directly ruled the eastern areas of Germany from 1945 until the establishment of East Germany in 1949.
