Segregation means separation. Its specific meaning varies with the context.
- Social separation of an individual from others on the basis of:
- race is racial segregation.
- ethnic group, such as language or caste, is ethnic segregation.
- religous group is religious segregation.
- sex or sexual orientation is sexual segregation.
- Biology: The separation of homologous chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis is known as Mendel's law of segregation.
- Geography: The separation of groups from a large population, especially into different areas.
- Sport: The act of situating each team's fans in separate spectator areas of the stadium to prevent fan violence during a game/match. Particularly common in European football.
- Traffic: The separation of a person who is traveling from others according to a group classification (such as pedestrian, bicyclist, or motorist).
- Material science: The inhomogeneous allocation of alloying additions and tramp elements in metal alloys.
- Criminal justice: To keep an inmate of a prison separated from the other prisoners whenever possible. This is usually resorted to when the inmate fights with other prisoners, or as an added punishment onto a prison sentence.
- Securities: Security segregation is the separation of assets belonging to customers from the assets of the financial institution holding them.
