The park covers 14,763km² of grassland plains and lies in the north of the country , against the Kenyan border, where it meets the Masai Mara National Reserve. It also contains a few small settlements, including Seronera, home to an airstrip. The national park neighbours the Ngorongoro National Park.
The "Big Five" animals of the park, so named by hunters on safari decades ago, are lions, leopards, elephants, rhinoceroses, and Cape buffalo. The park is also home to hyenas, cheetahs, zebras, birds of prey, and many other species.
Close to the park lies Oldupai Gorge, where many of the oldest hominid fossils and artifacts have been found. The park adjoins the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is part of the larger Serengeti ecosystem. The park has been listed by UNESCO as one of the World Heritage Sites. The administrative body for all parks in Tanzania is Tanzania National Parks, or TANAPA.
Myles Turner was one of the Park's first game wardens and is credited with establishing anti-poaching defenses. His autobiography, "My Serengeti Years," provides a detailed history of Serengeti National Park's early years.
