History

In 1896, Nanyang Public School was founded by Sheng Xuanhuai in Xujiahui, Shanghai, which belonged to the Business and Telegraphs Office of the Chinese government. There were four schools: a normal school, a school of foreign languages, a middle school and a high school. Sheng Xuanhuai was also the first president of the school.

In 1904, the Ministry of Commerce took over the school, and changed its name to Imperial Polytechnic College of the Commerce Ministry the next year. In 1906, the college was taken over again by the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs, and changed its name to Shanghai Industrial College of the Ministry of Posts and Telegraphs. When the Republic of China was founded, the college was run by the Ministry of Communications, and changed its name once again to Government Institute of Technology of the Communications Ministry. In 1918, the School of Management was founded in this institute, and it became one of the oldest academic institutes founded by the Chinese government.

In 1920, the institute was combined with some other colleges and change its name to Nan Yang College of Chiao Tung. In 1928, the name was changed to First Chiao Tung University of the Communications Ministry. In the 1930s, it was known as the "Eastern MIT". In 1938, the Ministry of Education took over the university and it was renamed National Chiao Tung University (the separate institution of National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, is still known by name). In 1943, the graduate school was founded.

With the end of the Chinese Civil War in 1949, the new Communist government adopted a policy of creating specialist universities in the Soviet style of the time. Under this policy, some faculties of the university were incorporated into other faculties. At the same time, engineering faculties from other universities were incorporated to create a specialist engineering university. The name was changed to Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Shanghai Second Medical University were merged on July 18, 2005.

Campus

Xuhui Campus:

the originally main campus, which is located in the Xuhui District of Shanghai, formerly a largely Catholic area, and the site of several educational institutions. The campus architecture reflects American influence. However, the main gate is in the traditional Chinese style and reflects the University's earlier status as the "Imperial Polytechnic College". The approaches to the main gate were via a series of marble bridges, similar to, although smaller than, those found in Tiananmen Square. However, recent road expansions have caused the demolition of most of the bridges.

Minhang Campus:

the presently main campus ,which is located in the Minhang District,in the outskirts of Shanghai. The area of this campus is 284 hectare. Now, almost all of administrative and academic frameworks of the university and all of the students, including bachelors ,graduates and doctors were moved to this campus, which is now neighbored with the new built Minhang Campus of East China Normal University.

South Chongqing Road:

the formerly campus of Shanghai Second Medical University, which is located in the Luwan District of Shanghai.

Qibao Campus

Shangzhong Road Campus

Fahuazheng Road Campus
