Sherwood Forest

Sherwood Forest is a country park surrounding the village of Edwinstowe in Nottinghamshire, England, the remnant of a much larger forest historically associated with the legend of Robin Hood. This much larger forest extended into several neighbouring counties.
There is a particular oak tree in Sherwood Forest named the Major Oak which, according to local folklore, was Robin Hood's headquarters. The Major Oak is between 800 and 1000 years old, and since the Victorian era its massive limbs have been partially supported by an elaborate system of scaffolding. In February 1998 a local company took cuttings from the Major Oak and began cultivating clones of the famous tree with the intention of sending saplings to be planted in major cities around the world. The Major Oak was featured on the 2005 TV programme Seven Natural Wonders as one of the wonders of the Midlands.
Sherwood Forest is also the location of one of the United Kingdom's largest Center Parcs holiday villages.

In early 2006 it was announced that major changes would be taking place regarding the Sherwood Forest visitor centre. Nottinghamshire county council have placed a £50 million pound bid to the Big Lottery Fund and this May assesors from the company will be coming to visit the park. The ambitious plans for Sherwood Forest include: building a new and impressive visitor centre, tree top walkways with stunning views of the Forest, providing state of the art educational facilities which can cater for everyone from primary school pupils to PHD students, a conference centre, a discovery centre where the public can learn more about the history and ecology of Sherwood Forest, and perhaps something about their own roots by tracing their family tree, planting more trees in the forest improving existing cycling, walking and riding routes and introducing new ones that link all the country parks togetherde:Sherwood Forest pl:Sherwood (las) ro:Pădurea Sherwood simple:Sherwood Forest
