Sinking Spring is a borough located in Berks County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 2,639.
Geography
Sinking Spring is located at 40°19'29" North, 76°1'21" West (40.324725, -76.022386)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²). 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Area gets its name from the large number of under ground streams. These streams carve out the limestone and form sinkholes, thus the name Sinking Spring.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 2,639 people, 1,233 households, and 748 families residing in the borough. The population density was 754.8/km² (1,960.7/mi²). There were 1,269 housing units at an average density of 362.9/km² (942.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough was 95.76% White, 1.06% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.21% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 2.73% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,233 households out of which 23.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% were married couples living together, 10.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 33.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.14 and the average family size was 2.72.
In the borough the population was spread out with 19.6% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 89.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,078, and the median income for a family was $50,064. Males had a median income of $36,875 versus $24,635 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $23,053. 11.6% of the population and 12.0% of families were below the poverty line. 18.9% of those under the age of 18 and 14.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
