Template:Wiktionary A slogan is a memorable phrase used in a political or commercial context as a repetitive expression of an idea or purpose.

Slogans vary from the written and the visual to the chanted and the vulgar. Often their simple rhetorical nature leaves little room for detail, and as such they serve perhaps more as a social expression of unified purpose, rather than a projection for an intended audience.

The word "slogan" comes from sluagh-ghairm (pronounced slogorm), which is Scottish Gaelic for "battle-cry".

Slogans and the age of media

Slogans are attractive particularly in the modern age of informational bombardment from numerous media sources. Slogans are a core part of propaganda. They can be classified in two main categories:

A political slogan generally expresses a goal or aim ("Workers of the world, unite!"), or sum up an ideology or belief.
Whereas an advertising slogan is most often intended as a memorable identifier ("The real thing").
