Smedjebacken is a Municipality in Dalarna, in central Sweden. Its seat is in Smedjebacken, with 5,700 inhabitants, situated at Template:Coor dm. The second city is Söderbärke, with 1,000 inhabitants. Smaller towns or villages include Hagge, Gubbo, Larsbo, Vad, Furbo, Lembo and Saxehammar. These locations have often been the seat of local industries (bruk), often as saw mills or iron works, and have century-old histories. Today several have been turned into tourism attractions.

The municipality covers an area of 953.3 km². Of the total population of 11598, 5857 are male, and 5741 are female, with a population density of 12 inhabitants per km². The municipality borders to eight other municipalities.

Geographically, the town Smedjebacken is situated by the lake Barken, with an area of 34km², which in turn belongs to the Kolbäcksån stream-system, which drains into lake Mälaren to the south-east.

The coat of arms depict a sailing ship and cogwheels. These are intended to depict the old and new industry sectors of the municipality. It was granted first time 1947, but has undergone a few redesigns since.
