Sandy Level is a census-designated place located in Henry County, Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 689.

Geography

Sandy Level is located at 36°33'33" North, 79°43'35" West (36.559188, -79.726501)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 17.6 km² (6.8 mi²). 17.5 km² (6.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.59% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 689 people, 256 households, and 186 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 39.5/km² (102.2/mi²). There were 277 housing units at an average density of 15.9/km² (41.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 25.69% White, 73.29% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 256 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% are married couples living together, 24.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.0% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size was 3.22.

In the CDP the population was spread out with 28.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 84.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $20,089, and the median income for a family was $37,011. Males had a median income of $27,969 versus $19,342 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $12,757. 21.4% of the population and 15.5% of families were below the poverty line. 22.1% of those under the age of 18 and 38.1% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
