Technology

Considered one of the most technologically advanced colleges in the nation (in the year 2001) for its ThinkPad program and wireless technology initiative, the college recently became the first in the nation to comprehensively replace all phones in residence halls with individual cellular phones for students, leading to many rings and interruptions during classes. Image:MSC Raylink.jpg However, as of the Spring 2006 semester, MSC's IEEE 802.11 'legacy' wireless computer network, implemented using proprietary Raylink equipment, is widely regarded by students to be slow, undependable, and inefficient for both their academic experience, and their digital lifestyles. The school also restricts students' choice of computing platforms, as the wireless network is inaccessible to computers running Mac OS and some variations of Linux.

Student Parking

Parking at Morrisville State College is considered to be a problem by many who attend the institution. The New York State University Police charges between 54 and 87 dollars for a parking permit, and issues hundreds of parking citations each semester. Each parking citation will cost a student 15 dollars for a first offense, and all monies collected from parking citations and permits are, supposedly, used for the construction and maintenance of parking lots. Parking spaces are often occupied by cars with an incorrect parking permit, or no permit at all. This causes much frustration for students who have paid to park in that spot, and the University Police rarely do anything more than ticketing the car. Repeat offenders are dealt with by more ticketing and, eventually, towing. Many students would like to see more done to dissuade people from taking the parking spots that they paid for.

Campus Highlights

  • A new highlight and addition to the MSC campus is a 24-hour vending machine dubbed "Shop 24". While the machine is popular in Europe, MSC was the first college in the United States to adopt it. It offers a refrigerated section for milk, eggs and soda. The Shop 24's prices, however, are widely considered to be highly inflated, with even a small box of Ritz crackers costs nearly $4.00. If you want that midnight snack, it would be a wise choice to hit the local Big M grocery store, located on the other side of town.
  • For late-night entertainment, usually after a few hours of binge drinking at the nearby Ontario Heights Apartments, or "Campus Hill" as the locals call it, Morrisville students will often make a 25-minute trip to the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Oneida, New York.
  • Morrisville State College was also chosen as one of the top five colleges in the nation for campus activities by Campus Activities magazine.

Norwich Campus

The Morrisville State College Norwich Campus also offers programs in business, technologies, liberal arts/education transfer, and nursing to Chenango area residents and employers.
