State University of New York at Oneonta

The State University of New York at Oneonta is a four-year liberal arts college in Oneonta, New York, United States, with approximately 5,600 students. Established in 1889 as a state normal school with the sole mission of training teachers, the College at Oneonta was a founding member of the State University of New York system in 1948. Today, the College offers many bachelor's degrees in the liberal arts and sciences, as well as bachelor's degrees in business, human ecology (family and consumer sciences), mass communication, meteorology, and water resources. A number of graduate degrees are also offered. The school is particularly renowned for its education program (given its traditional context at the college) and more recently its music industry degree.
The State University of New York at Oneonta was also used in the 1973 cult horror film "The Last House on Dead End Street" (aka The Fun House). The film was made by then SUNY Oneonta student Roger Michael Watkins and featured entirely local talent, including SUNY professor Paul M. Jensen.
Along with education, there are several extracirricular activities a student may choose to which include clubs that span many interests, which are overseen by the Student Association, Division III Sports, and Greek Life.
Greek Life
Greek Life at the State University of New York at Oneonta has a complicated history since in the mid-1990's, the school changed their Greek Code of Conduct, and all the fraternities that were recognized at that point either left campus (i.e. decided not to be recognized any more), or were forced off of campus life.
Around 2002-2003, recognized Greek Life started to return to campus with Chi Phi, which was officially installed on March 7, 2003. On December 5, 2003, a second fraternity, Phi Kappa Psi was installed. A third fraternity, Alpha Kappa Lambda, was installed in Spring of 2005. Tau Kappa Epsilon, a fraternity that left campus in the mid-1990's has recently begun the recognition process and is now in the one-year, probationary, Interim Recognition phase. Phi Beta Sigma, a predominantly black fraternity has recently begun the recognition process in Spring 2006.
Recognized sororities on campus include Sigma Gamma Phi also known as Arethusa, Pi Delta Chi, Sigma Sigma Sigma also known as Tri Sig for short, Phi Sigma Sigma also known as Phi Sig for short, Sigma Delta Tau. The multicultural sorority, Mu Sigma Upsilon is currently in the interim recognition phase as of Spring 2006.
