The first version of Stickies was written by Apple employee Jens Alfke and included in System 7.5. It is also included in Mac OS X, now with features such as transparent notes, styled text and the ability to embed pictures in notes.
In System 7.5, there is an easter egg. Steps to find it:
- Create a new note.
- Type "Antler!" without the quotes.
- Also, typing "secret about box" and dragging it into the desktop allows you to play a Breakout-like game, or view a picture of the Apple building with an interactive flag, as well.
In Mac OS X v10.4, Stickies is one of the widgets included with Dashboard.
Similar applications are available for most other operating systems. A generic term for such applications is "desktop notes".
There are also web versions of the same idea. See www.mystickies.com for more details (new in Jan 2006).
