Image:CTMap-doton-Storrs.png Storrs is a census-designated place and part of the town of Mansfield, Connecticut located in eastern Tolland County. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 10,996. It is dominated economically and demographically by the presence of the main campus of the University of Connecticut.

In the aftermath of September 2005's Hurricane Katrina, Storrs was named by Slate as "America's Best Place to Avoid Death Due to Natural Disaster."[1]

The leader of alternative rockers Weezer, Rivers Cuomo, grew up in Storrs and attended the local high school, E.O. Smith High School.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 14.8 km² (5.7 mi²). 14.7 km² (5.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.53% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 10,996 people, 1,630 households, and 645 families residing in the community. The population density was 748.8/km² (1,939.3/mi²). There were 1,701 housing units at an average density of 115.8/km² (300.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the community was 81.10% White, 5.67% African American, 0.09% Native American, 9.13% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.70% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. 4.40% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,630 households out of which 15.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.6% were married couples living together, 4.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 60.4% were non-families. 34.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.19 and the average family size was 2.70.

The age distribution, heavily influenced by UConn, is: 4.0% under the age of 18, 76.1% from 18 to 24, 10.1% from 25 to 44, 3.9% from 45 to 64, and 5.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 21 years. For every 100 females there were 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the community was $26,371, and the median income for a family was $64,833. Males had a median income of $34,766 versus $23,229 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $9,947. 33.5% of the population and 10.0% of families were below the poverty line. 5.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line. However, traditional measures of poverty can be highly misleading when applied to communities dominated by students, such as Storrs.
