The Somoni is the currency of Tajikistan (ISO 4217 code TJS). The somoni is divided into 100 dirams. In October 30, 2000, the somoni replaced the Tajikistani ruble, so that 1,000 rubles equaled 1 somoni.
As of September 2005, one euro can be bought with 3.35 somoni, while the US dollar only requires 2.78 somoni, making it the highest-valued currency unit in Central Asia.
Banknotes exist in denominations of 100 TJS, 50 TJS, 20 TJS, 10 TJS, 5 TJS, 1 TJS, 0.5 TJS, 0.2 TJS, 0.1 TJS, 0.05 TJS, and 0.01 TJS. Coins exist in denominations of 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 dirams, and 1, 3 and 5 somoni.
