Thane District

Thane (pronounced Thaanai, by the locals) is a district in northern Maharashtra in India. The capital of the district is the city of Thane. Other major cities in the region are Navi Mumbai (formerly New Bombay), Kalyan-Dombivli, Mira-Bhayander, Bhiwandi, Ulhasnagar,Ambernath, Kulgaon-Badlapur, Dahanu, Shahapur, Wada and Vasai-Virar.

Thane comprises of 13 talukas. The southern talukas are the location of urban areas and hence urban Indians while the western coastal region is mostly populated by Kolis, Marathi and Gujaratis. The northern and the eastern talukas are populated by the Warli tribes, known for making stark images from red mud on house walls.
