The Ice Storm is a novel by Rick Moody published in 1994 and subsequently adapted as a dramatic motion picture released in 1997.
Set during Thanksgiving, 1973, The Ice Storm tells of two suburban Connecticut families, the Hoods and the Carvers, and the difficulties they have dealing with the tumultuous political and social climate of the day. The story focuses on a brief period of time when a major ice storm hits their town of New Canaan, just as both families are melting down from the parents' alcoholism, escapism and adultery, and their children's sexual experimentation.
The film version of The Ice Storm was directed by Ang Lee, and was written by Rick Moody (novel) and James Schamus. Though it opened in the United States on September 27, 1997 to widespread critical acclaim, its release was limited and it grossed just $7.8 million on a budget of $18 million, technically making it a box office disaster.
