James J. Bulger
From Free net encyclopedia
James Joseph "Whitey" Bulger (born on September 3, 1929 in South Boston, Massachusetts) is a fugitive wanted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation for racketeering (under the "RICO" act), murder, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit extortion, narcotics distribution, conspiracy to commit money laundering, extortion and money laundering. The FBI says that Bulger, along with fellow mobster Stephen Flemmi, was a leader of the Winter Hill Gang, an Irish American organized crime group operating in the Boston area.
Bulger, a convicted bank robber, spent time in Alcatraz before becoming an FBI informant along with Stevie Flemmi, and using that position to eliminate competition and consolidate his own control of organized crime in Boston.
Bulger is said to have participated in (participation ranges from commiting the murder to simply being present) the following murders, among others: Debra Davis: Strangled by Stevie (she was his girlfriend) because he suspected she was ceating on him. Debra Hussey: Also Killed By Stevie (she was his stepdaughter), for reasons unknown, although it later came out that they were having an affair. Buckey Barrett: Killed for neglecting to pay Jimmy a percentage from a heist. John McIntyre: Killed for informing of a shipment of arms bound for the IRA. Brian Halloran: Probably killed for cooperating with the FBI, and lying making up stories incriminating Jimmy and Stevie. Micheal Donahue: (a caualty of the Halloran hit) Paulie McGonigle: Killed because of his involvement with the Mullins gang, which opposed Jimmy in previous gang wars. Donald McGonigle: Killed after Jimmy mistook him for his brother Paulie Richie Castucci: Killed for cooperating with the FBI against the Winter Hill Gang. Eddie Conners: Killed for allegedly cooperating with the FBI after being arrested for a $500,000 armored car robbery.
Three of these murders occured in the same house, at 799 East Third Street, where John McIntyre, Deebra Hussey, and Bucky Barrett were kille between 1983 and 1985.
After being warned by now-imprisoned FBI agent, John Connolly, that he was about to be indicted, Bulger, along with one of his two girlfriends at the time, Catherine Greig, fled prosecution. He is on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list and a reward for USD $1,000,000 is being offered for information leading to his capture.
The last confirmed sighting of Bulger was in London in 2002, though in late July, 2005, the FBI sent agents to Uruguay to investigate a lead.
Bulger is the older brother (by five years) of William M. "Billy" Bulger, former President of the Massachusetts State Senate and head of the University of Massachusetts system from 1996 to 2003 and (by nine years) of John "Jackie" Bulger, a retired Massachusetts court clerk magistrate who was convicted in April 2003 of perjury to two grand juries regarding testimony he had given about contact he had had with Whitey.
