Tift County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 38,407. The county seat is Tifton, Georgia6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 696 km² (269 mi²). 686 km² (265 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.42% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 38,407 people, 13,919 households, and 10,105 families residing in the county. The population density was 56/km² (145/mi²). There were 15,411 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (58/mi²). The racial makeup of the county was 65.31% White, 28.02% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.59% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 7.67% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 13,919 households out of which 35.40% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.40% were married couples living together, 16.90% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% were non-families. 23.30% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.00% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.65 and the average family size was 3.10.
In the county the population was spread out with 27.20% under the age of 18, 11.60% from 18 to 24, 28.40% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.70% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 94.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county was $32,616, and the median income for a family was $39,083. Males had a median income of $27,874 versus $20,997 for females. The per capita income for the county was $16,833. 19.90% of the population and 15.50% of families were below the poverty line. 28.00% of those under the age of 18 and 14.60% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
