Tifton is a city located in Tift County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,060. The city is the county seat of Tift CountyTemplate:GR.

Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 15,060 people, 5,532 households, and 3,601 families residing in the city. The population density was 651.1/km² (1,686.2/mi²). There were 6,102 housing units at an average density of 263.8/km² (683.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 61.26% White, 31.57% African American, 0.23% Native American, 1.64% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.61% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 7.56% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 5,532 households out of which 33.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% were married couples living together, 20.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.9% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the city the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 14.3% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 18.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,234, and the median income for a family was $37,023. Males had a median income of $27,206 versus $20,174 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,455. 26.9% of the population and 20.7% of families were below the poverty line. 41.0% of those under the age of 18 and 13.7% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

In 2000 Tifton officially became the Reading Capital of the World. The city has previously been recognized as a Top 100 Small Town and as the Cleanest City in America.
