M2-9 is a protoplanetary nebula, which was discovered by Rudolph Minkowski in 1947. It was imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope in the 1990s. The bipolar planetary nebula has a particular form of twin lobes of material that emanates from a central star. Astronomers have dubbed this object as the Twin Jet Nebula because of the shape of the lobes. Its form resembles the wings of a butterfly, for which it is sometimes referred as Wings of a Butterfly Nebula.
