The United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM or USSOC) is charged with overseeing the various Special Operations Commands (SOC or SOCOM) of each branch of the U.S. military. The command is part of the U.S. Department of Defense. When Special Operations Forces (SOF) of different branches are used for the same operation, USSOCOM acts as the Joint Command Center (JCC) of all the forces used in the operation. USSOCOM is headquartered at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida.

Marine Special Operations Command (MARSOC)

In an October 28 2005 meeting between SOCOM chief Army Gen. Bryan Brown, Marine Corps Commandant Gen. Michael Hagee and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, the announcement was made for a permanent Marine Corps presence in SOCOM. Named MarSoc, it will be numbered at roughly 2,700. It is to be headquartered at Camp Lejeune, N.C., with subunits in Camp Pendleton, C.A., and will be commanded by Brig. Gen. Dennis Hejlik, currently the deputy commander of I Marine Expeditionary Force. The MarSoc or Marine Corps Special Operations Command, will be split into 3 subunits, with the MSOG, or Marine Special Operations Group leading the way, taking the typical special operations role, conducting direct action, special reconnaissance, and foreign internal defense among others, and will be made up mainly by Reconnaissance Marines. The second part of the new command is the FMTU, or Foreign Military Training Units, which will include infantrymen and others, will train foreign militaries and help ease the work load from Army Special Forces. The third part is the Special Operations Support Group, which will have counterintel/humint personnel, EOD, dog handlers, and other administrative and support Marines, that will support not only the Marines but other SOCOM assets. The FMTU has been operating since 2005, and the rest of MarSoc was officially activated in a February 24th ceremony on Camp Lejeune, N.C., where MarSoc will be located.
