The umbra (Latin: "shadow") is the darkest part of a shadow. From within the umbra, the source of light is completely blocked by the object causing the shadow. This contrasts with the penumbra, where the light source is only partially blocked and there is only a partial shadow.
The umbra is also the comparatively dark central region of a sunspot.
"Top Secret Umbra" is the codeword for the highest, most sensitive category of communications intelligence.
In the World of Darkness role-playing game setting, the term Umbra is the most commonly used term for those realms beyond the reaches of physical reality, such as the spirit world, the afterlife, and the astral plane.
In the Elder Scrolls series of free-form role-playing games, Umbra is a sword, created by an ancient Sorceress, which has the ability to steal souls. This can be used by the player in the form of a "Soul-Trap" spell. It is usually guarded by a rogue warrior who has become a living extension of the sword, similar to the Soul Edge from the Soul Calibur series of fighting games.
The Japanese electro/jazz/punk/pop band Boom Boom Satellites release their second album, entitled "Umbra" in 2001 following their worldwide debut album in 1999 called "Out Loud".
