Very Large Flexible Barge

(Redirected from VLFB)

Very Large Flexible Barges (VLFBs), also known as Water Bags or Medusa Bags, are an idea for the transoceanic shipment of high quality drinking water, currently in prototype stage. VLFBs may also in future have a role as floating reservoirs. These vessels could be towed singly or in a group by a suitably sized tugboat. The maximum towing speed would be approximately 3 knots and when empty the barges could either be towed or recovered and stowed on the deck of a tug or a support vessel. VLFBs would be manufactured from a flexible membrane, buoyancy relying on the contents or cargo being less dense than the surrounding sea water.
