- For an introduction to mediation, see Wikipedia:Mediation
The Wikipedia mediation committee was set up in January 2004 to assist in resolving disputes between users. It is part of the dispute resolution process on Wikipedia. Requests for a mediator to assist in a dispute are made at Requests for Mediation.
If mediation fails, the dispute may be referred to the Arbitration Committee for binding resolution. The role of the mediation committee is explicitly to try to resolve disputes to the mutual satisfaction of all, and not simply a first step towards banning or for vetting candidates for the Arbitration Committee to ban. Mediation is instead an honest attempt to resolve the problem. The parties in dispute should understand that any concerns they have will be given a fair hearing.
- The specific ways in which this committee serves the community is continuously developing, as the work proceeds and the needs of the community change.

Ldan has likewise been inactive on Wikipedia.
Who is the chair?
User:Essjay is the elected chairman as of February, 2006.
The role of the chair, or co-chair, is one of coordination and facilitation, not of supervision. The role does not imply hierarchy or authority within the committee but allows a sufficient degree of formality so that we have a way of saying "Here's the outcome of the mediation". Appointment to the chair position is rotating every few months. Any member of the committee can apply to be co-chair, and will have to be approved by the other members.
All mediators can participate in any committee-related tasks, not only the chairs. Mediators are independent in their choice of whose case to mediate, and how to mediate. Typical roles of the chairs include ensuring that mediators are trained and standards upheld, that mediation requests are answered and that everyone is consulted on important decisions. They may also act as spokesperson for the committee for formal announcements (for example, to announce the failure of a major mediation and the transfer of the case to arbitration).
Former chairs have been Redwolf24, User:MacGyverMagic, Jwrosenzweig, Bcorr, Danny, TUF-KAT and sannse.
How does one become a member of the committee?
- Read through the Wikipedia:Mediation pages and familiarize yourself with the procedure of mediation to see if it is something you would like to do.
- Add your name in the nominations section below, at the bottom please.
- There is no strict voting procedure, but other users may comment on the nomination if they wish.
- A user shall become a mediator after an unspecified period of time as long as there is no opposition from the Mediation Committee, no veto from Jimbo, and general agreement from the community.
Once accepted, the mediator is welcome to join the mediation mailing list.
Nominations for mediator
- Old nominations are archived at Wikipedia:Mediation Committee/Old nominations.
- To add a nomination, use {{subst:medcom-nom|username=MediatorWannabe|comment=I want to be a mediator because... ~~~~}}
- Currently unassigned mediation requests can be found at: Wikipedia:Requests for mediation/Open Tasks. Applicants are encouraged to select an unassigned mediation and volunteer to mediate for it; this allows the committee to review the candidate's performance, and provides the candidate an opportunity to experience mediation firsthand.
- Please place new nominations at the bottom of the section.
- Please be aware that this is not RFA. Non-mediators should be aware that the opinions of non-mediators are taken into account when deciding to promote or reject candidates, but the decision lies with the committee.
- Comments should relate to the candidate's ability to serve as a mediator. Comments that raise issues unrelated to the candidate's suitability for the Committee will be disregarded, and may be removed at the descretion of the Committee members.

Master_of_Puppets (talk • contribs) I would like to be a mediator because... well, mainly because I like to help people, and I never get annoyed or come up short of patience. I have already quieted down a small issue [2]2 a while ago; it isn't a large achievement, but it left me with the want to help out around. I have a relatively low edit count, but I interact with many users daily, and feel that I could contribute even more by joining the Mediation Committee. Thanks for reading my request! _-M o</span> P-_ 23:15, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

Wisden17 (talk • contribs) I have been active on Wikipedia for about 8 months, although only since January have I had a registered account. I feel that I would be able to add a lot to the Mediation Committee, including experience of real life mediation, and have already completed my first mediation case (on Wikipedia) which can be seen here Wisden17 00:26, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

- I know there aren't open requests right now, but you may want to take one at Mediation cabal and then you would be shooting two birds at cone. Showing us how would you handle mediation and helping them with the huge backlog they have currently. -- ( drini's page ☎ ) 02:27, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- One step ahead of you Drini, I 'took' the Scientology case on the MedCabal the other day, but am just waiting for all parties to respond to whether a) there are happy for me to mediate, and b) what medium of communication they want to use for the mediation. But I certainly take your point about getting as much experience on Wikipedia as possible, and I'm just waiting for the next Request for Mediation to become ready to be assigned a Mediator as I'd like to get more of a chance to show my abilities as a mediator (and ease the 'nerves' of those who may be worried about the fact I'm not an admin etc.). --Wisden17 18:35, 16 April 2006 (UTC)
- It appears now that the Scientology case has effectively ended, the one editor removing the sentence that caused the 'consternation' in the first place, without any involvment by me! So, I'll take on another case, and post the name of the case here, so you can all keep an eye on my progress and 'style'. As I said to Ral315, I'm very happy to discuss with any user, although this would be of most use to current Committee Members, what I feel the nature of mediation should be on Wikipedia (when of course you do not have face-to-face interaction) and how I have skills and experience in real life mediation, and am, as you can see, trying to get as much skill and experience in Wikipedia's mediation, and the inherent 'challenges' it presents. I'm happy to do this via talk pages, or this page, but I feel it is much easier to have a real-time conversation with someone, so I'm happy to discuss things either via IRC, MSN Messenger, Skype, Google Talk, AIM, or any other programme. --Wisden17 15:10, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

Werdna648 (talk • contribs) Not sure if I'm experienced enough (not sure about community standards on mediation) - but I've always kept a cool head on Wikipedia, never gotten into a massive edit war. I have gotten into conflicts, sure, but I've done my best to resolve them as best I can, staying WP:COOL, assuming good faith, and being WP:CIVIL. For reference, my edit count is here - approximately 1500; I've been here since July last year - although only active since December, and my contributions can be found here Werdna648T/C\@ 09:40, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

- Ouch. Sorry, I've been fairly busy looking at all sorts of other things (such as making sure my bot doesn't randomly decide to go haywire on me, et cetera. - Well, let's put it this way. Have you been involved in any requests for comment, requests for arbitration, requests for adminship, or any sort of election (Esperanza, etc.) where other users made their opinions known on you? Ral315 (talk) 17:46, 21 April 2006 (UTC)
