Wario Land II is a video game released for the Game Boy in 1998. It was the last first party title made for the Game Boy and was later remade to take advantage of the Game Boy Color hardware. Both versions of the game can be enhanced in Super Game Boy, but in the latter version, the save file must be deleted if a Color or Super save is in it before playing the other one. Arguably, the Game Boy Color is better suited, and the only thing really missing is the borders from Super Game Boy. In this game, Wario has to recover his treasure from Captain Syrup and her Black Sugar Gang (formerly the Brown Sugar Pirates, or possibly a translation error).

Changes from Wario Land

Unlike the previous game in the series, Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, in Wario Land II, Wario is immortal (not invincible) and loses coins rather than health. Rather than using Mario-esque caps with abilities, the attacks of certain enemies would transform Wario into other forms.

Rather than the navigable world of Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Wario Land II is in the form of a story with chapters (though the order is not entirely fixed).

Plot

The game features the return of Wario's nemesis, Captain Syrup. Early one morning, she and a few of her soldiers, the Pirate Gooms, sneak into Wario's Castle and cause havoc. They steal his precious treasure, set off his giant alarm clock, and leave the faucet running, flooding much of his castle. After Wario wakes up and figures out what's going on, he gives chase to them all across the surrounding lands. The game is noteworthy for its branching paths. By finding hidden exits in some stages, the player can change the direction of the game's plot (loose as it is) and uncover different endings, as well as find more treasure. In fact, finding every single ending is the only way to truly finish the game.

Bosses

There are several bosses that Wario must fight to end the chapters. Each "boss" stage begins as a regular level, but there is a door with a dragon skull over it. Behind this door, the boss awaits, and Wario must defeat the boss to complete the level (unless there is a secret exit in that story). In boss battles, it is possible to lose the battle and be ejected from the arena. Then players must find the boss room again and make another attempt. Normally, boss battles (excluding the Giant Spearman) only appear on the fifth and final story in each chapter.

The Giant Spearman

This boss appears in various levels, and is the easiest to fight because he cannot send Wario up to the top of the screen. Wario can defeat him by ground pounding on him. After 2 ground pounds, he will change colour. He goes from green to aqua to blue to purple to red. After 2 last ground pounds, Wario will complete the level and get 100 coins.

Chapter 1: One Noisy Morning

Defeat the Giant Snake

In this battle, Wario must fight a giant snake. The snake attacks by trying to eat Wario. If the snake is successful, he will turn Wario into an egg and send him to the top of the screen. The giant snake can be defeated by jumping on his head several times to knock him out.

Chapter 2: S.S. Teacup

Defeat Bob-o

Bob-o is a large purple bird of the Black Sugar Pirates. He attacks by swooping down and creating updrafts. If players fail to duck during the updrafts, they will be blown to the top of the screen. Bob-o can be defeated by jumping on his head until he's knocked overboard.

Chapter 3: The Maze Woods

Defeat the Giant Bee

The giant bee attacks by moving back and forth in the air, then stopping to fall down and sting Wario. If Wario is stung, he will become Puffy Wario and float up to the top of the screen. The giant bee can be defeated if Wario jumps on his head. Once he does so, a tiny bee will come out and try to sting Wario. The tiny bee can be defeated if he is jumped on, kicked, or charged into. After defeating the tiny bee, the giant bee will come back for more. He attacks the same way. After jumping on him again, two tiny bees will come. After they're defeated, the giant bee will come back. He will retreat once more if he's jumped on. Then two tiny bees will come, and the giant bee will shortly return after the tiny ones appear. By jumping on the giant bee one last time, the level will be complete.

Chapter 4: In Town

Anyone for B-ball?

This battle is a street basketball game against a giant Black Sugar bunny. He will attack by jumping up and down. He also throws basketballs. If Wario is jumped on, he will turn into a ball. The bunny can slam dunk Wario when he's in this form unless Wario is hit by a real basketball. If Wario gets slam dunked 3 times, he will be sent up to the top of the city. When Wario jumps on the boss, he will be turned into a ball. By throwing the bunny into the net 3 times, Wario will win the game.

Chapter 5: Syrup's Castle

The Final Battle

In this battle, Captain Syrup will be floating in her ship above the room. There is also a fire jet slowly moving across the room. Being hit by this will send Wario to the top of the screen. Captain Syrup will throw spearmen, which Wario can stun by jumping on. Throwing 3 of them up at Captain Syrup will cause her ship to fold up and her to start dropping bombs. These will turn into 2 fire jets if they hit the ground, so they must be caught. Throwing them at Syrup does nothing, so they must be thrown at the fire jet to cause it to rise up and possibly hit Syrup. After she's hit twice, she will be defeated.

Chapter 2 (secret): Invade Wario's Castle

Kick 'em Out

Captain Syrup has a giant metallic spearman that she will drop while she floats above in her ship. The spearman will charge back and forth. He gradually gets slower until he has to lift up his spear to get recharged. While he's recharging, Wario can charge into his face to hurt him. After doing this twice, he will be stunned. Wario can pick him up and throw him at Syrup to defeat her. However, she will drop yellow sparks that will cause Wario to drop the spearman and her to recharge it. In this case, Wario will need to damage it again.

Chapter 2 (secret): Go Down to the Cellar

Defeat the Cave Master

This boss battle takes place on a small platform. It is possible to fall off. If Wario falls off, he will not be able to climb back up, causing him to lose the battle. The boss is a giant piglike creature that charges, similar to how Wario does his. The boss will try to knock Wario off by charging. Wario must jump over the boss, then charge into him from behind to knock him off several times, each time causing him to get faster and harder to knock off.

Chapter 3 (secret): Ruins Under the Sea

Escape from the Ruins

This boss battle takes place underwater. The boss is a blue spiky fish. He will try to swim around and gulp Wario. The only way to defeat him is to bump him from behind several times. If he succeeds at gulping Wario, he will spit him up to the top of the screen.

Captured Syrup

Escape from the ruins is the fourth story in the Ruins under the sea chapter. If players defeat the boss, they will proceed to chapter 4 (In Town). If they take the secret exit, they will end up at this story. At the beginning of the battle, Captain Syrup will float away in a bubble. Then a tiny bubble creature will appear, inflate, and start bouncing all over the room. If it touches Wario, he will be taken to the top of the screen in a bubble. Wario must jump on the monster several times. Each time it will get faster and create a slightly transparent clone of itself (the clone doesn't do anything, it just bounces). After several hits, the bubble will deflate and be defeated.

Final chapter (secret): Mysterious Factory

Awaiting Syrup

This boss battle takes place on a small platform, similar to the cave master battle. If Wario falls down or is knocked down by Captain Syrup, he cannot climb back up and must start over. Captain Syrup will float around in her hot air ship. This can be broken if it is charged into a few times. Then Captain Syrup will float to the top of the screen and start dropping spiky bombs. These will knock off Wario if they touch him or explode, but they can be stunned with a single jump and thrown up at Captain Syrup. After 3 hits (each time making the bombs harder to jump on), she will be defeated.

Final chapter (secret): Uncanny Mansion

Capture the Ghost

In this battle, a big white ghost will be hanging from the ceiling and try to grab Wario. If he succeeds, Wario will be taken to the top of the screen. Wario can defeat him by charging into him whenever possible. After a few hits, the ghost's string will break and it will fall down.

The Really Final Chapter

Steal Syrup's Treasure

In the Really Final Chapter, there is only one story, and the boss is the Giant Spearman. However, the Giant Spearman walks on platforms that Wario cannot land on. There are also spikes in the room which will knock off Wario when he touches them. By ground pounding on the spearman without falling off once, Wario will get Syrup's treasure.

Endings

Ending #1: Reached after Wario defeats Captain Syrup in her castle. This is the only non-hidden ending. It is possible to reach it after having found one secret area, the "Go to the cellar" stages, but heading down any other paths will take Wario to another ending. In it, Wario defeats the Pirate Captain and sends her and her cronies over the horizon. He then reclaims his treasures and heads home over the end credits.

Ending #2: Reached at the end of the "Invade Wario Castle" stages. To reach these, Wario must stay in bed at the beginning of the game instead of waking up. This can be done in early in the game, unlocking the "level select screen" early. Wario throws the Captain and her cronies out of his castle, sending them flying over the horizon.

Ending #3: At the end of "Ruins at the Bottom of the Sea." Incapacitated by the bubble monster, Cap'n Syrup and her men fall prey to Wario, who once again knocks them silly and returns home with his treasure once again in his grip.

Ending #4: At the end of "The Mysterious Factory." Wario sends Cap'n Syrup flying through the ceiling of the apparently underground factory. He then exits the factory through the hole in the street that their paths created.

Ending #5: At the end of "The Uncanny Mansion," Wario defeats Cap'n Syrup once again. However, as he is about to grab his treasure, a trap door opens up underneath him. As Wario falls downward into what appears to be a bottomless pit, he suddenly wakes up and falls out of bed. What has transpired in the game so far has apparently all been a dream. He goes back to sleep. However, over the end credits, the Syrup Gang can be seen traveling to and subsequently entering Wario's Castle, apparently indicating that he has actually had prophetic dreams. Despite the apparent dream, his treasures carry over, leading the player to wonder if it was truly a dream in the first place.

Ending #6: At the end of "The Really Final Chapter," only reachable after every other ending has been attained, Wario steals the Pirates' treasure instead of hunting down his own. However, as he returns home, he is followed by the Giant Spearman that he defeated to claim the treasure in the first place.
