Worthington, Minnesota

Worthington is a city located in Nobles County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 11,283. It is the county seat of Nobles County6.
The city's site was first settled in the 1870s as Okabena Station on a line of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha Railway, later the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad (now part of the Union Pacific Railroad) where steam engines would take on water from adjacent Lake Okabena. More people entered along with one A.P. Miller of Toledo, Ohio, under a firm called the National Colony Organization. Miller named the new city after his wife's maiden name.
George Dayton was a banker and a real estate developer in Worthington before moving to Minneapolis to start Dayton's Department Store (now part of Macy's). Recently restored, the 1890 Dayton House is a community gem.

Image:MNMap-doton-Worthington.png According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 22.0 km² (8.5 mi²). 18.5 km² (7.2 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 16.10% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there were 11,283 people, 4,311 households, and 2,828 families residing in the city. The population density was 609.3/km² (1,578.9/mi²). There were 4,573 housing units at an average density of 246.9/km² (639.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 76.81% White, 1.91% African American, 0.49% Native American, 7.06% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 11.49% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 19.28% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 4,311 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.4% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 28.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city the population was spread out with 25.5% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 20.1% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.6 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $36,250, and the median income for a family was $44,643. Males had a median income of $28,750 versus $20,880 for females.
