Yugi Mutou (武藤 遊戯 Mutō Yūgi) is the protagonist of the manga and anime series Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Yugi is featured at least partially in every volume of the manga and episode of both the first anime series made by Toei Animation and the Duel Monsters anime series.

Yugi Mutou, a freshman (1st year) at Domino High School, was given the Millennium Puzzle in pieces by his grandfather, Sugoroku Mutou (Solomon Muto). When he assembles it in the first episodes of the anime and manga, he plays host to the spirit of a 3,000-year-old Egyptian Pharaoh (In the English anime, the pharaoh is 5,000 years old). The pharaoh sacrificed his life and sealed his soul within the Millennium Puzzle to stop the Dark God of evil Zorc Necrophades from destroying the world. (In the English anime, the pharaoh was sealed in the puzzle to lock in the magic of the shadow game to prevent the destruction of the world.) Atem, though the name is used for a fictional pharaoh, is actually a variant of the name of the Sun god Ra.

There are two chambers in Yugi's mind. One belongs to the innocent kid, and the other to a darker, older presence, Dark Yugi (Yami no Yūgi, 闇の遊戯) or Yami Yugi in the English anime, from the Millennium Puzzle. When under stress or when playing a game, the spirit inside the Millennium Puzzle takes over and is either partially or completely possessed by the 3,000 year old nameless pharaoh (namonaki pharaoh). The character is often referred to as Yu-Gi-Oh (遊戯王 Yūgiō), the king of games. In the English anime, Yami Yugi is sometimes referred to as Pharaoh Yami. He is commonly given the nickname Yami by fans.

Because there is often frequent interaction between the two parts, the name Yugi actually refers to both the school kid and the ancient Pharaoh. However, between themselves, Yugi refers to the Pharaoh as "the other me" or "my other self" (mou hitori no boku, もう一人のぼく) or in the English version of the anime, "Yami", and Dark Yugi refers to his younger counterpart as simply aibō ("partner"), the other me (mou hitori no ore, もう一人のおれ), or by his name. Other people call Dark Yugi "the other Yugi" (mou hitori no Yūgi, もう一人の遊戯). After Yugi and his friends learn that Dark Yugi is in fact the spirit of Pharaoh Atem, they begin to refer to him as simply 'Pharaoh' in the English versions, most likely as both an honorific and an acknowledgement of Dark Yugi's true nature. If one Yugi dies, the other Yugi dies with him. In the original Japanese versions of Yu-Gi-Oh!, Yugi applies honorifics to almost everyone he meets, while Dark Yugi doesn't make as much of an effort. Dark Yugi uses ore instead of boku to mean "I"; ore is a boastful way of saying "I" in Japanese. Dark Yugi in general has a rougher, looser speech pattern than Regular Yugi does. (See Wikibooks:Japanese:Pronouns)

A not-so-average school kid, Yugi is pure-hearted and kind. He lives with his mother while his father is away on business. Yugi is good at games and puzzles (yūgi meaning "game" in Japanese), and especially Magic and Wizards, a.k.a. Duel Monsters. His favorite monster in the game is the Dark Magician (Black Magician in the Japanese versions), but he thinks that he is most like Maha Vailo. In the English anime, he lives with his grandfather while we hear nothing about his parents.

Yugi, who at Domino is in class 1-B, is part of a group of very good friends, who are Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler in the English anime), Hiroto Honda (Tristan Taylor), and Anzu Mazaki (Téa Gardner). In the first series anime, Miho Nosaka is also one of Yugi's friends, in the manga she only appears once, and in the Duel Monsters anime she doesn't appear at all. Yugi's friends often cheer Yugi from the sidelines, and Jonouchi has dueled with Yugi as part of a tag team in the manga and Duel Monsters anime. Yugi has been friends with Anzu since childhood and is in love with her. Anzu is in love with Yugi, but is uncertain if it is Dark Yugi (Yami Yugi) or regular Yugi that she loves more. The first characters from "Yūgi" and "Jōnouchi" form the word "Yūjō" (友情), which means "friend" or "fellowship". In the original Japanese, the "Yu-Jyo" (友情) card (The "Friendship" card in English) is named after the word and the relationship between the characters.

Naming

Yugi's family name in the English manga is sometimes romanized as Mutoh, but is almost always Mutou, and his family name is romanized as Mutou in the uncut anime DVDs. In the English anime, his name is romanized as Yugi Muto. It was recently revealed that his last name in the English anime is spelled Muto, although it's pronounced as Moto. In the English video games, Yugi's surname is either rendered as Muto or Moto. In the ani-manga of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Movie, his last name is "Muto".

Note

Kazuki Takahashi spelled out Atem's name as "A-T-E-M-U" in the hieroglyphics that revealed his real name both in the anime and manga. This has sparked up a heavy debate among the fans about whether or not the creator intended for his name to be Atem or Atemu. Many believe that this is simply a case of Engrish and that the creator did not do enough research while others believe that he had and that the U is supposed to be present. Others point out that the hieroglyphics were written erroneously and shouldn't be taken into consideration when translating his name from Japanese to English.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX

In Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (Yu-Gu-Oh! Duel Monsters GX), Yugi appears in the very first episode; however, only half of his face is shown. He's one of the 'legendary duelists' now, along with Seto Kaiba. He's older, definitely taller, and even has a lower voice in both Japanese and English versions (in the English version, he has Yami Yugi's voice). The main character of Yu-Gi-Oh GX, Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki in Japanese), bumps into him on his way to the Duelling Academy, and Yugi gives Jaden the Winged Kuriboh (Hane Kuribo) card, saying that the card is lucky, and that it seems to want to be with Jaden. Among the episodes, the students at the Duel Academy (Duel Academia) learn about Yugi and Kaiba, and the audience gets to see drawn pictures of them. Also, in episodes 18 and 19 of the series, Yugi's deck goes on tour at the Academy.

Notable Dueling Cards

Yugi's deck is most famous for his Dark Magician (known as Black Magician in Japan). Yugi's deck probably has the most variety and balance of any other character's deck in the series, and is sometimes referred to as a Strategy deck. His original deck mostly composed of low level Earth monsters and Dark monsters. During the Battle City Arc, he keeps the theme of having Earth and Dark monsters with dangerous effects. His Magnet Warriors become a major part of his deck, as does his Dark Magician Girl. His deck from Battle City onward focuses more not only on his Dark Magician, but also on his manipulation of his magic cards that are designed to destroy and/or negate the effects of his oppenets magic and trap cards.

Yugi's deck was stolen and used in Yu-Gi-Oh! GX (Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters GX) by a character named Dimitri (Kagurazaka in the Japanese version), but was eventually won back by Jaden Yuki (Judai Yuki), the main character of Yu-Gi-Oh! GX.
