Mission is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 45,408.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 62.5 km² (24.1 mi²). 62.5 km² (24.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.04% is water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 45,408 people, 13,766 households, and 11,384 families residing in the city. The population density was 726.6/km² (1,881.9/mi²). There were 17,723 housing units at an average density of 283.6/km² (734.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the city was 77.63% White, 0.37% African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.63% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 18.64% from other races, and 2.34% from two or more races. 81.03% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 13,766 households out of which 43.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.8% were married couples living together, 14.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.3% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.29 and the average family size was 3.68.
In the city the population was spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 17.1% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,647, and the median income for a family was $33,465. Males had a median income of $25,710 versus $20,718 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,796. 26.8% of the population and 22.6% of families were below the poverty line. 37.4% of those under the age of 18 and 15.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

- Mission, TX is the home of the ruby red grapefruit. Because of this, the city holds an annual parade down Conway Avenue, the city's main street which features floats decorated with fruit and produce as well as bands, law enforcement agencies and fire departments from Mission as well as surrounding areas.
- Mission, TX is the birthplace of Tom Landry, former coach of the Dallas Cowboys.
- Mission, TX is the hometown of former WWE superstar and WWE Hall of Famer Merced Solis, aka Tito Santana.
- Moore Air Force Base (deactivated) is located 14 miles northwest of the city.
