USS Stingray (SS-161), the fictitious setting for the comedy movie Down Periscope, was played by still-seaworthy World War II veteran submarine USS Pampanito (SS-383).
One submarine has borne the name USS Stingray (SS-186) in reality, but she had the hull classification symbol SS-186. SS-161 was assigned to USS S-50.
