Belmont is a village located in Lafayette County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 871. Belmont was the original capital of the Wisconsin Territory. The village is located within the Town of Belmont.

For many years U.S. Highway 151 was routed through Belmont. The highway was recently expanded to four lanes, with the new highway being routed to the north of the village.

Belmont is located at 42°44'15" North, 90°20'0" West (42.737679, -90.333347)Template:GR.

Image:WIMap-doton-Belmont.png According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.5 km² (0.6 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there were 871 people, 377 households, and 245 families residing in the village. The population density was 579.8/km² (1,511.6/mi²). There were 401 housing units at an average density of 266.9/km² (695.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 99.66% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.11% from two or more races. 0.11% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 377 households out of which 24.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.0% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.0% were non-families. 30.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 17.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.90.

In the village the population was spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 21.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.5 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $34,853, and the median income for a family was $49,688. Males had a median income of $28,646 versus $22,159 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,763. 5.4% of the population and 1.7% of families were below the poverty line. 4.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
