Johann Christoph Denner (August 13, 1655April 20,1707), was a famous woodwind instrument maker of the Baroque era, to whom the invention of the clarinet in 1690 is attributed.

Denner was born in Leipzig. The clarinet evolved from an earlier instrument called the chalumeau. With the help of his son Jacob Denner, JC Denner improved the chalumeau, creating a new instrument called the clarinet. Denner altered the position of one of the two keys of the chalumeau, thus increasing the range by over two octaves. He also created a better mouthpiece and enlargeded the bell of the instrument for better projection and resonance. He died at Nuremberg.
