The IRMA is a non-profit association that is set up by Irish record companies and by companies that are asscociated with the Irish recording industry. The IRMA operates to promote and protect the welfare and interests of the Irish recording industry. The association is also responsible for collecting and compiling national statistics and charts for the Republic of Ireland.

The association is involved in multiple activities that deal with the recording industry and business. The IRMA surves as a lobby group at various civil, industry and political levels to protect and enhance the interests of its member companies. Its main goal is to act as the voice for the Irish recording industry within Ireland and on international levels as well.

The IRMA is also heavily involved in combating piracy and illegal music filesharing in Ireland. On April 12, 2005 the asscociation began to take legal action against "serial filesharers" in Ireland who illegally distribute music on the internet. On November 15, 2005 the IRMA began "Phase II" of its plan to battle filesharing.

The association also manages and is responsible for the shareholding in the Irish chart company, ChartTrack. Its job is to ensure that the Irish music and video charts are a reasonable reflection of sales.

Only Irish companies can become members of the IRMA. All members pay a yearly fee depending on how large their company is. Curently, the IRMA has 51 member companies.
