Charles Manly (13 May 1795 - 1 May 1871) was the Whig governor of the U.S. state of North Carolina from 1849 to 1851.
Manly was born in Chatham county, North Carolina in 1775. He went to the University of North Carolina in 1814. In order to pay for his college he often tutored people. He studied law with someone by the name of John Haywood and was allowed into the Bar in 1816. In 1817 he married Haywood's niece named Charity Haywood In 1823 he became the Reading-Clerk of the State House of Commons. Later in 1830 he Principal Clerk of the House of Commons. He was Principle Clerk until 1848 when he became governor. He ran against Reid for governor. Manly nominated by the Republican party. Manly was a big supporter in public education. During his term he worked hard at getting the colonial history documents from London . In 1850 he was nominated again by the Republicans and ran against Reid for the second time. Although this time he lost. Many say that his loss was due to his over confidence. Manly went to South Carolina to become a pastor of churches in Edgefield Court-House. Manly was a highly respected preacher, he routinely went on missionary trips through Alabama.
