In Indian classical music, the alapana is chosen according to the lakshanam of the raga which is going to be sung. The Alapana is rendered in different speeds but has no beat or taalam associated with it. Using the structures and phrases the raga is outlined in an alapana.
Alapana is divided into three parts:
