Mount Barker was founded in 1834. Local government is provided by the District Council of Mount Barker, and the population of the area is approximately 9,000. It lies at the base of Mount Barker, from which it takes its name. The mountain in turn is named after Captain Collet Barker, an early explorer of the area.
Mount Barker is in the federal Division of Mayo and mostly in the state electoral district of Kavel—the southern and western edges are in Heysen. The postcode is 5251.
The town is rapidly expanding with the creation of many new residential sub-divisions, some of a much smaller size than the traditional country town allotments.
Mount Barker is the biggest town in the Adelaide Hills and has a swimming pool, cinemas, six primary schools, tavern, and many restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, shops and department store. Mount Barker has four high schools: Mount Barker High School (public)[1], Cornerstone College (Lutheran)[2], Saint Francis de Sales (Catholic)[3], and Mount Barker Waldorf School (Waldorf)[4]. It is also the base for Hills patrols of SA Police (SAPOL), has an SA Ambulance Station, Country Fire Service station which is one of the busiest n the state, and the Adelaide Hills SES unit.

Mount Barker is home to the Steamranger historic railway which operates The Southern Encounter steam trains through Strathalbyn and Goolwa to Victor Harbor.
