Major Danby is a fictional character in Joseph Heller's 1961 novel Catch-22. He is a college professor and intellectual who sees himself as a poor match for the armed services. He briefs the airmen on upcoming missions. He is almost shot for insubordination—sighing after a demand for silence—by General Dreedle. Along with Chaplain Tappman, Hungry Joe, Nately, and Orr, he is one of the few soldiers with whom the main character Yossarian maintains a decent relationship throughout the novel.
Major Danby was portrayed by Richard Benjamin in Mike Nichols' 1970 film adaptation of the novel.
