Deep River is a town located in Middlesex County, Connecticut. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,610. It is part of what the locals call the "Tri-town Area" made up of Deep River, Chester, and Essex, Connecticut.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 36.7 km² (14.2 mi²). 35.1 km² (13.6 mi²) of it is land and 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.30% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 4,610 people, 1,824 households, and 1,262 families residing in the town. The population density was 131.4/km² (340.1/mi²). There were 1,910 housing units at an average density of 54.4/km² (140.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 94.56% White, 2.41% African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.80% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 2.95% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 1,824 households out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 9.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.8% were non-families. 24.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the town the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 26.3% from 45 to 64, and 13.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.6 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $51,677, and the median income for a family was $62,260. Males had a median income of $46,268 versus $32,454 for females. The per capita income for the town was $32,604. 5.1% of the population and 3.9% of families were below the poverty line. 4.7% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
